Backstory: A few weeks ago, a good friend of mine fell from the top of a three story building and got seriously messed up . He's recovering, but will be laid up for awhile. I made this so he could have something sloooooow to listen to on all those painkillers. I did everything at half speed which is actually way slower than a real chopped and screwed tape, but just like in Houston, this was recorded live straight from the turntables. (One take yall..)

ABOVE: The OG Screwed Up Records and Tapes shop in the southside of H-town. This place is a true American landmark.. for DJs at least.

KS-20 is a baile funk producer from Nagoya, Japan... That sounds kind of crazy at first, but it's really just the way of the world these days. Ya feel me? What should be noted is that KS-20's tracks are dope. Like all the best baile funk producers, the way he chops up those volt mix drums makes for a hard beat that's constantly getting switched up. On "Fun-Key" he also adds in the illest synth stabs ever, putting a nice old school feel in the mix.
He sent me some tracks to put up, and we did a little interview too. It's mad short, because of language barriers, but it gives you a window into his influences and technique. Plus he shouts out some other cool japanese producers, who maybe you haven't heard yet. KS-20 on the Bort Sampson broadcast:

BortSampson: How did you first get exposed to the funk sound?
KS-20: "Diplo Rhythm" was the first time I heard portuguuess rap, even though that track is isn't really baile funk, it's just some otehr kind of bass music.

BortSampson: What producers are influencing you today?
KS-20: Sanny Pitbull, from Brazil. I think his productions are so progressive in the baile funk scene. And I love the sound of Sinden from the UK, The Crookers from Italy, Top Billin from Finland, and Sweat X from south africa also.

BortSampson: Are you linked up with other producers in Japan who are also working with the baile funk sound? Is there a scene for it with a following?
KS-20: Yeah, the original Japanese baile funk DJ is Loco2kit. In japan there is a local baile funk scene. That's what I know, because I don't really know about inside the Brazilian communities. Also related here, are the bmore/ghetto bass producers, DJ Kentaro, DJ Hanger and Leopardon.

BortSampson: What equipment do you produce with? Do you use an MPC like a lot of the Brazilian guys?

KS-20: My main machines are a Casio FZ-1 (sampling keyboard) and Roland MC300 (sequencer). Both are late 80 productions. And Akai hard disc recorder is used to recording and editing.

BortSampson: Anything else?

The first joint on this radio rip is a CRAZY unreleased Rusko track called "You're on My Mind, Baby," and by far the most exciting thing I've heard in a minute. I opened for this dude in Seattle last spring (or opened for the dude who was opening for him.. the bouncers were changing light-bulbs above the dancefloor while i was playing...) anyway when rusko finally went on, he really blew me away. not only the most exciting dubstep set i've ever witnessed, but just one of the most exciting sets period. that's the thing about this guy, like any really interetsing producer/DJ he can't be classified. This new track really sums it up. Rusko just makes ill modern music that doesn't sound like anything else. I've given the first three minutes of the youtube like 50 rewinds. can't wait for the album, bro!
